Course Components

The STCW 95 course is broken down into 4 key modules which will teach you different skills. This will also make them easier to apply in the relevant situations and will be logical for you to understand as well as the fact that you can complete each module individually, giving you much more freedom and ability to work around your life. The course will amount to 5 days and will have a practical focus as well as the all important theoretical groundwork to provide a thorough understanding.

The first component you will meet is STCW 95 Personal Survival Techniques. Before all other things, you must know how to handle yourself at sea, for without this you may not be able to carry out everything else we want you to do. It will include using equipment such as survival suits and life rafts as well as what to do in the case of an emergency or how to act on hypothermia. This will naturally progress on to Elementary First Aid which will provide you with a basic grounding in dealing with recurrent shipboard emergencies such as shock, bleeding and delivering CPR. AS you might imagine, those teachers with actual experience can deliver much more than simple teaching – they will be able to use their own experiences to lend a gravity to the situation that is highly conducive to learning.

Fires are a huge problem aboard vessels and prevention is one of the biggest concerns. We will teach you the best maritime practices for preventing fires from occurring in the first place as well as methods of dealing with a fire once it has started. This includes hazard awareness, the ability to use equipment to extinguish fires as well as structures of incident response teams and team support. We will also conduct live exercises.

The last module tackles Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities. Maritime training includes more than immediate protection for oneself and crew, it also includes information about enclosed spaces, personal rights, drug and alcohol awareness and abuse prevention. This module also includes information about the types of shipboard emergencies and includes alarms and signals and personal safety equipment. Pollution must also be considered, both its effects and the prevention of it.
